“Relief.”

Pain
I have no wish at all to show power. There is no rule that permits it either. The eternal being that power comes from has forbidden it — power is not a thing to be put on display for nothing. Though there are times when using it is allowed.
Seven in the evening. I was travelling with five other passengers in a local CNG from Kandirpar, through Tomsom Bridge, to Paduar Bazar. The two young men on the front seat were students at Cumilla University, on their way home from tutoring. The worry of a kingdom sat on both their faces. At that age the eyes are supposed to brim with delight. Looking at them, something in me went quiet.
Behind them, an old man, a girl and me. I was going to look at fish; though I let it seem, from the outside, that I was going to buy some.
The moment we crossed Tomsom Bridge, four motorcycles came at us from both sides and blocked the road. One of them, the leader sort, drew out an enormous machete, showed it to the passengers front and back, and said that whatever anyone had, they should hand it over.
I would have handed it over. I really would have.
But then I looked once at those two young men from the university, at the old man, at the girl. Somewhere inside my chest there was a small ache.
All at once I remembered Jane, of the Volturi, from Twilight. Let me try her gift, I thought. I had never used this power before.
With great reluctance, with eyes as cold as a fish's, a small cruel smile at the corner of my mouth, I looked into the man's eyes. Under my breath I said only —
“Pain.”
At once a force out of the cosmos broke from my eyes and went into his head.
The small-time boss departed for another world.
Arriving there, he found eight men with machetes hacking at him, blow upon blow. Now the foot came away from the leg, now the leg from the knee, now the whole leg from the hip. One stroke took off an arm. Sometimes the ribs opened and everything inside came out. Someone else simply took the head off the body.
But the most Painful part was this — every time, his severed parts joined themselves back together, miraculously. And the hacking began again.
At his sky-splitting screams one or two would glance over, smile sweetly, and walk on. In that other world the thing seemed to be great fun. As though the man were a guinea pig — to be cut into small pieces and handed in to the science teacher.
After a while someone who looked like me arrived.
He said, —And how did your practice go?
They began to give their accounts. But who had gone wrong where, and by what method the body could be cut finer still so as to give more Pain — on all this he began to instruct them in detail.
The attentive students took their notes down in their neurons.
I said —
“Relief.”
At once the leader of the muggers came back from that other world to Tomsom Bridge.
An hour in the other world had taken one second at Tomsom Bridge.
The moment he was back he dropped the machete from his hand. He looked at the rear seat of the CNG. Finding in my face something of the science teacher's from that other world, he said in a shaking voice —
—Oh sir! Father! Forgive me. Never again in my life will I take anything from anyone. From today I am your bought slave!
Then he called his followers and told them all to come and touch my feet in salaam.
Nobody would let go of my feet.
I said, —All right. Go on, all of you. Mugging is not really good work.
I told the CNG to move on.
Everyone was looking at me somewhat differently now. The leader's followers, for their part, guarded us all the way to Paduar Bazar. Then, too frightened to say a word, they left.
My fellow passengers were watching me by then with deep suspicion. Their eyes said it plainly — I must be some godfather of this gang of muggers.
I only smiled a little.
He who knows, knows.
There is no rule that lets you show power to anyone for no reason.
Then I went to the fish market.
After a great deal of haggling I bought an enormous seven-kilo pangash from the beel and a five-kilo kalibaush. I haggled over the cutting too, and had them cut.
Then it struck me — let me see what level the honesty of this country's people has come to!
I hired a mishuk. A little way along I contrived to push the twelve-kilo sack of fish off and let it fall under the mishuk.
Out of the corner of my other eye I noticed — a man had picked it up.
So the bait had been taken!
I was satisfied.
A little further on I stopped the mishuk. Then I came back and began, in front of everyone, to act — my sack of fish had fallen on the road and was lost.
The man who had picked up the sack quickly took it and hid it in a shop nearby, and settled down to watch my performance.
I was walking about, this way and that.
After a while the man came up and asked —
—Brother, what have you lost?
With a sorrowful face I said —
—I have lost a sack of fish.
On the man's face, the shadow of a manufactured sympathy.
I smiled a little.
Because tonight, at his house, something is going to happen. 😎😎
